On the S.T.A.R reading test, my students averaged a 2.6 reading level. This shows that the students demonstrate difficulties in comprehending what is read. The unit Increasing Reading Comprehension was chosen because it is difficult for my 5th grade students to understand what they read. I chose this unit becuase it will teach my students to utilize a new strategy (KWL) when they read to help them understand what they have read. This track will help students master the TN Curriculum Framework Reading Standard of developing the reading skills necessary for word recognition, comprehension, interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and appreciation of the written text.
