Track Description
Fifth grade students seem to have a hard time using an expanded vocabulary and/or a thesaurus to make their writing more interesting and exciting. The learning gap and content standard will both be addressed through the Descriptive Writing unit because students will become familiar with using a thesaurus and learn synonyms for common words. This will help them to see how a wide variety of words can be used to make their writing more interesting and exciting. Students will also practice these skills when writing about a variety of topics. The unit was also chosen because it combines thesaurus usage with fun and creative writing activities.
This unit will also allow my students to use the Internet in the classroom to answer questions and practice skills on line as described in the Profiler teacher "Usage Survey."
Content Standard: The student will develop the structural and creative skills necessary to produce written language that can be read and interpreted by various audiences.
