 Track Description
I chose this unit "Robert Frost Poetry" to help my 6th grade reading class understand figurative language and symbolism in poetry. From a teacher-made test only 55% of the class passed and these with very poor scores. Students do not understand poetry and therefore it is a difficult subject for them. The Tennessee Curriculum States: The student will develop the reading skills necessary for word recognition, comprehension, interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and appreciation of the written text. The student learning expectations are: develop an understanding of and respect for multicultural, gender, and ethnic diversity in language use, patterns, and dialects, improve comprehension by interpreting, analyzing, synthesizing, and evaluating written text, select reading material for a variety of purposes, and read orally to develop fluency, expression, accuracy, and confidence, and identify and interpret literary elements and figurative language. From this unit, I hope to illustrate to students that they can take what they have learned about prose and apply it to poetry. My goal is for students to want to read and write more in poetry when we have finished this unit.
