Track Description
My third grade students were having difficulty with synonyms and antonyms. I developed this track to include lessons that would help with this learning gap. The TN Curriculum Framework states that the student will develop the structural and creative skills necessary to produce written language that can be read and interpreted by various audiences. It also states that the student will develop the reading skills necessary for word recognition, comprehension, interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and appreciation of the written text. In this unit, the chosen lessons will help students to become better writers and to develop their reading skills for word recognition. It will also address these survey questions: 4. The students will try to learn as much as they can about the things they study. 9. After they learn to do something, they can show a friend how to do it. 15. They will use the Internet in class to practice skills. The learning expectations for each lesson are as follows: 1. The students will learn about synonyms and antonyms and how to use them. They will match word cards with a partner and use them in sentences. 2. The students will practice identifying word pairs as synonyms or antonyms, and will match them accordingly. They will then do a writing assignment with their learning. 3. The students will demonstrate effective writing style by the use of vivid words, varied sentences, and appropriate transitions. 4. The students will identify synonyms or antonyms for vocabulary words and to reinforce vocabulary. 5. The students will go on-line to practice synonyms and antonyms by taking different quizzes.
