 Track Description
The unit will help students increase reading proficiency. Fourth grade students have only shown 32% in Reading on the TerraNova test. The content Reading standard is the student will develop the reading skills necessary for word recognition, comprehension, interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and appreciation of the written text. The Tennessee 3-5 Social Studies Content Standard that states that students will identify and demonstrate an understanding of the cultures and human patterns will also be addressed in this unit. Using the holiday theme woven with history, the students can be motivated to read more, comprehend, and decode words as well as use the Internet for information as stated in survey question 24. TSW create a slide show to express knowledge about holidays. TSW create a tri-fold booklet to explain the information read about Easter. TSW create a Kwanzaa symbol that indicates knowledge of the idea behind that holiday. TSW create a Venn diagram to compare and contrast the similarities and differences between the Thanksgiving stories they have read and heard. TSW design a card that shares his knowledge about Mother's Day. TSW create a tie book to share facts about Father's Day.
