47% of my 3rd Graders are unable to recall main ideas and important facts from a reading assignment. The TN Curriculum Frameworks Content Standards for Grades 3-5 Language Arts/Reading is: The student will develop the reading skills necessary for word recognition, comprehension, interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and appreciation of the written text. Learning Expectations: TLW improve comprehension by interpreting, analyzing, synthesizing, and evaluating written text; and use comprehension strategies to enhance understanding, to make predictions, and to respond to literature. TLW utilize the KWL strategy to help them understand what they have read; will be able to listen to a story read from the newspaper, then answer questions to see which groups can earn the most points; they will become pen pals with Junie B. Jones; they will be able to listen to oral text while visualizing, and then will create an oral collage.
