 Track Description
Eighth grade music students have demonstrated a gap in being familiar with jazz music and its importance to our musical culture. Students will analyze work songs, spirituals, blues and gospel songs in order to develop an appreciation for the origins and evolution of jazz music. Students will then prepare a pictorial timeline tracing the evolution of jazz from its beginnings in America through its modern forms and styles. This unit addresses the standard: 1. Describe distinguishing characteristics of representative music genres and styles from a variety of cultures. 2. Classify by genre and style (and, if applicable, by historical period, composer, and title) a varied body of exemplary musical works and explain the characteristics that cause each work to be considered exemplary. The unit provides students with hands-on experience in using the Internet to research facts and musical examples. The student will "spot the important facts, concepts, and vocabulary when learning something new." Students will locate songs, name composers, and list major characteristics of types of jazz music.
