Track Description
My school's improvement plan calls for increasing Terra Nova gains in Levels 4 and 5 proficiency to 5% above national percentages in grades 4-5 language arts subjects. To improve reading scores, it is necessary to challenge them to read the many chapter books that are available on their level. A TN Curriculum Framework Content for Reading Standards for Grades 3-5 states that "the student will develop the skills necessary for word recognition, comprehension, interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and appreciation of the written text". Learning expectations for this standard include the following: The student will: Apply a variety of reading strategies; Extend reading vocabulary utilizing sight words and context; Improve comprehension; Make predictions and respond to literature; Read independently for a variety of purposes; Develop skills in making inferences; Identify and interpret figurative language; and Utilize sources of information including technology. The focus of this unit is Reading, however it extends across the curriculum to include Writing skills and learning in Science.
