This lesson is designed to have students work cooperatively to learn about synonyms and antonyms and how to use them. The students will match word cards that have the same meaning and word cards with different meanings and use the words in sentences. Students in this class have difficulty with grade-level synonynms and antonyms. They can identify simple synonyms and antonyms, but cannot with more difficult words. This unit correlates with the Tennessee Curriculum Framework for English/Language Arts, grade cluster 3-5: Content Standard: The student will develop the reading skills necessary for word recognition, comprehension, interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and appreciation of the written text. Learner Expectation: Extend reading vocabulary utilizing sight words, phonetic and structural analysis, and context
