Track Description
This unit was created because my students are below grade level in reading skills. They are unable to see patterns in words to help them when decoding. The students will be reading The Cat in the Hat by Dr. Seuss and doing activities with sight word recognition and decoding patterns with the rhyming words in the book. The Tennessee Language Arts Standards for grade cluster 3-5, Reading states, "The student will develop the reading skills necessary for word recognition, comprehension, interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and appreciation of the written text." The profiler survey indicated a deficiency in trying more than one way to solve a problem. Our School Improvement Plan goals indicated a need to increase students' scores in math and language arts. I believe that providing practice and strategies in decoding will increase student achievement, both on achievement tests and in the classroom.
