Social Studies is often a neglected subject in my classroom due to the amount of time spent addressing reading skills. A survey of my students showed that 50 percent of my class were unaware of famous African Americans such as Harriet Tubman. The 4th grade Tennessee Social Studies curriculum standard states that students will exhibit a knowledge of history identifying and describing major events, people, and trends. This unit will provide them knowledge, understanding, and make them aware of the important contributions made by many African Americans. It will incorporate online lessons and Websites to increase the use of the Internet in my classroom for research purposes as stated in the teacher profile survey.
