This unit, Elections and the Voting Process, will help these third grade students overcome the stated learning gap of not knowing how candidates were chosen and how elections were run and outcomes determined. Although this lesson was designed for the presidential election it can be used with any election under any circumstances. This site provides insights about democracy which includes information such as: What is democracy? ... Democracy for whom? ... Worldwide struggles for democracy, Myths about democracy Classroom activities ... If I ruled the world ... Having your say ... What is democracy? ... Democracy when? ... Value of the vote ... Taking action ... School mock election References: ... Article 21 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights ... Glossary of terms. The student will use the Internet to learn more about these terms by clicking on them for more explanations. These activities will address the Grades 3-5 Tennessee Curriculum Frameworks Standard for Social Studies which is Standard 2: Students will be able to analyze, interpret, and evaluate the rights, responsibilities, and privileges of citizens living in a democratic society. To achieve this standard, the learner will explain how the Bill of Rights provides for individual rights and responsibilities. I selected this unit because it will let students use Internet in my class to research topics, as referenced in pre-survey question # 22.
