This unit is designed to help students increase their understanding of written text by providing them with a reading comprehension strategy (KWL). Terra Nova data indicates that students have weaknesses in this area. TN State Frameworks Language Arts Cluster 6-8 states: The student will develop the reading skills necessary for word recognition, comprehension, interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and appreciation of the written text. Learning objectives for this unit include using comprehension strategies to enhance understanding and improving comprehension by interpreting, analyzing, synthesizing, and evaluating written text. Students will be using the newspaper to improve listening and reading comprehension skills. The unit will enable students to use the Internet to read newspapers. This relates to Item 24 on the Student Pre-survey. Higher level thinking skills will be increased as students analyze what they read.
