 Track Description
This track will address the learning gap in the 5th grade of Comprehension or rather the lack of. Terra Nova tests in our school show that our students are well below the State average in Language Arts and a large part of this is their inability to comprehend what they read. On teacher made evaluations, 60% of my students score below 70% on the comprehension portion of my tests. Fifth grade students have problems comprehending what they read. Even the students that read well have these difficulties. It is as though they are "word calling" and not retaining much. This unit was for my 5th grade students to help them to improve their comprehension skills. The students in my school have a serious gap in their ability to comprehend and remember what they hear and what they read. The student will improve their listening and reading comprehension skills through the use of the newspaper. The student will develop the reading skills necessary for word recognition, comprehension, interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and appreciation of the written text. My students do not use what they have learned to tell other students what they have learned. I hope that this unit will help them to be able to tell others about what they have read and heard.
