The purpose of this unit is to expose my gifted 4th grade students to history by utilizing historical literature featuring children as the main characters for them to identify with. The 4th grade Language Arts / 3-5 cluster Reading content standard states that the student will develop the reading skills necessary for word recognition, comprehension, interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and appreciation of the written text. This unit will include online lessons to increase the use of the Internet in my class for online research as described in the Profiler teacher Usage Survey. I will be assessing my students’ comprehension of historical events depicted in the novel.
