 Track Description
The stated Learning gap is "When asked to write an essay, paragraph, book review, etc., these 4th grade language arts students often use incorrect grammar, no punctuation or capitalization, and use short, choppy sentences that lack creativity. Paragraphs lack topic sentence, supporting sentences & concluding sentences." The unit "Create a Newspaper" was chosen because it gives students the opportunity to practice the writing process (1) prewriting, (2) writing, (3) editing, and (4) rewriting to compose competent paragraphs. Paragraphs must be assessed as competent before the students will be allowed to publish their articles in the online newspaper. We will publish our class newspaper on our school website. The students will provide the link to our class newspaper site from the Crayon.net online news. This unit will address the Tennessee State Curriculum Frameworks objective for Language Arts in grades 3-5 which states, “The student will develop the structural and creative skills necessary to produce written language that can be read and interpreted by various audiences.” I chose this unit because it allowed me to give students practice in (1) finding ways to use what they learn and (2) understanding how they can best demonstrate what they know about topics as described in the Profiler teacher survey items 6 & 16.
