The stated Learning gap is to explore making art forms that serve a function in daily life. The unit "Seeking the Words of Our Elders Through Patchwork Quilts" was chosen because it helps the students develop their own ideas for expression and use their understanding of materials, creative problem solving, observation, and imaginative skills. The 3rd grade Visual Arts content standard states that students need many opportunities to create art. Through creating art, children understand and experiment with various sources of inspiration for creative work. From creating their own works of art, children learn how and why other people create art and understand that art has personal meaning to the creator. The pre-survey shows that when my students learn something new, they need to combine it with other things they know to create new ideas, so I determined that this unit would give students opportunities to use what they know about design principals to create an original quilt for our class. I chose this unit because the students created their own functional art forms which allows them to have a better understanding of the personal meaning art has for it creator. The learning expectations are as follows:
Track 1- The student will create a functional art form.
Track 2-The student will create a quilt block(square) and combine it with others to make a class quilt.
Track 3-The student will demonstrate their knowledge of underground railroad and slavery by designing a quilt depicting historical events from this era.
Track 4- The student will will make a quilt with four lines of symmetry.
Track 5-The student will explain how quilts were used as maps during the Civil War.
