 Track Description
In this unit my 7th grade language arts' students will be required to read the novel, The Giver by Lois Lowry. The student will develop the reading skills necessary for word recognition, comprehension, interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and appreciation of the written text. The student will use, read, and view media/technology and analyze content and concepts accurately. The students will use prior knowledge and discern the important facts from the trivial using the Internet. They will practice analyzing text by investigating historical events to create a summarization. Students will complete a puzzle of text allowing them to see how structure influences text. They will also be expected to read for statistical information completing a chart with their answers and summarizing their findings. Students will respond to the novel by presenting their own endings after reading. This unit addresses survey results in several areas. My students will use the Internet in my class to research topics (historical events, and career possibilities) and they will get practice in choosing which parts of a topic are most important to explain to others when they are summarizing their research of other countries. Through questions given at several sites they will recognize what is important about a topic and be able to discuss why.
