 Track Description
My fourth graders have a limited understanding of the various types of graphs and the information that they provide. TN State Frameworks 3-5 states: ESTIMATION, MEASUREMENT, AND COMPUTATION: In order to develop understanding of Estimation, Measurement, and Computation, the mathematics curriculum should include problems which require students to apply appropriate tools and units of measurement, to develop effective estimation and computation strategies for producing reasonable results, and to calculate using appropriate tools such as mental mathematics, technology, manipulatives, and pencil-and-paper. PATTERNS, FUNCTIONS, AND ALGEBRAIC THINKING: In order to develop Algebraic Thinking through an understanding of Patterns and Functions, the mathematics curriculum must include problems which require students to describe, extend, analyze, and create a wide variety of patterns and functions using appropriate materials and representations such as tables, graphs, and mathematical notation. Students will interpret tables and graphs, practice probability using M&M candies, determine chance with coins, and make a living graph. This unit will help the students decide which tasks are most important to solve a problem and put them in the right order.
