 Track Description
The stated Learning gap is difficulty in reading comprehension and vocabulary. The unit Teacher Cyberguide: Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry was chosen because it familiarizes students with the concept of discrimination, prejudice, and the formation of civil rights as well as informs them of the results of stripmining for coal and its implications on the land and people of a region. The Reading 6-8 Content Standard states that the student will develop the reading skills necessary for word recognition, comprehension, interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and appreciation of the written text. I chose this unit because it allows my students to learn something as completely as they can (survey item #5) and to spot the important facts, concepts and vocabulary when they are learning something new (survey item #10). My students will keep a portfolio of work related to this book and some of the themes throughout it.
