Because my third grade students scored below the system and national average in Basic Understanding in Reading, I wanted to develop a unit to help them improve reading comprehension. A TN Curriculum Standard in Language Arts for grades 3-5 is, "The student will develop the reading skills necessary for word recognition, comprehension, interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and appreciation of the text." Learning expectations for this standard include the following: The student will apply a variety of reading strategies; improve comprehension by interpreting, analyzing, synthesizing, and evaluating written text; use comprehension strategies to enhance understanding, to make predictions, and to respond to literature; and experience and develop interest in literature which includes multicultural, gender, and ethnic diversity. A TN Curriculum Standard in Computer Technology for grades 3-5 is, "The student will use a variety of technologies to improve classroom learning, increase productivity, and support creativity. A learning expectation for this standard is as follows: The student will develop a strategy for performing a given task. In this unit, children will learn comprehension strategies, and read three books with the theme of making the world a better place. By incorporating reading, writing, art work, and technology skills, children will become active participants with the stories so that reading comprehension should improve.
