 Track Description
After the Civil War, the South went through the period of Reconstruction. The government reorganized the region so southerners could start life without slavery. Former slaves needed assistance to adjust to life with freedom. Carpetbaggers and scalawags, though often perceived with contempt, had vital roles during reconstruction. Moreover, this period witnessed the birth of the Ku Klux Klan and the spawning of Jim Crow laws.
