Track #356: Starting Points for Library/Media Specialists
Annotated by: Jennifer Holvoet
1. School Library Hotspots
http://www.assd.winnipeg.mb.ca/infozone/hotspots.html

This is an excellent starting point..

2. School Libraries On the Web
http://www.sldirectory.com/index.html

Many library/media specialists have their library posted on the web. Through this page, you can look at how others showcase their work and workplace. Maybe you could do something similar. If you don't have the time, perhaps a group of students could evaluate some of these sites and then design a site about their school library. Perhaps the best design could then be posted.

3. Evaluating Web Resources
http://www2.widener.edu/Wolfgram-Memorial-Library/webevaluation/webeval.htm

Here are some good checklists for students to use when learning to evaluate web sites.

4. Wingspread for Librarians
http://www.shsu.edu/~lis_whp/

You'll have to scroll down fairly far to get to the meat of this site from Texas. But I thought you might find the tips below the Sam Houston logo very useful.

5. Ask Scott, the Reference Librarian
http://www.askscott.com/

This web site is capable of searching any topic you like. This is a general site terrific for students and librarians.media specialists alike.

6. Librarian's Information Network for Essential Curriculum
http://www.bcps.org/offices/lis/

Nice resource created by Library Media Specialists at Baltimore Public Schools. This resource will provide you with tools to support curriculum issues within your school.

7. Blue Skyways
http://skyways.lib.ks.us/kansas/index.html

Blue Skyways is a shared information service for the Kansas library community. It is intended to help Kansas libraries serve as vital information utilities for their communities.

8. Integrating Technology
http://www.wwu.edu/~kenr/TCsite/home.html

This high-content, low-bandwidth Web site offers information to educators who play a leadership role in integrating technology in educational settings.

9. NDPL: Resources for Library/Media Specialists
http://oii.org/

Professional organizations and literary resources are found here on this page that loads quickly on dial-up connections. Take the link to Library or to Archives to find good stuff.

10. ICONnect
http://www.ala.org/aasltemplate.cfm?Section=aaslissues

Some wonderful on-line tutorials here about the Internet. Also access to KidsConnect which students can use to get answers to questions (We recommend close supervision of questions being submitted). You also might want to look at the winning mini-grants. I bet some of you have ideas that could merit a grant.

11. Interactive Electronic Serials Cataloging
http://www.library.nwu.edu/iesca

If you get lots of electronic serials, you may have been wrestling with how to catalog the information. This product from NorthWestern University may provide guidance.

12. Internet Library for Librarians
http://www.itcompany.com/inforetriever/

Scroll to look over the types of information available at this site if you don't know the search terms to use.

13. Serials in Cyberspace
http://www.uvm.edu/~bmaclenn/

Catalog of where to locate various electronic journals.
