This unit was created for a fifth grade Language Arts class. During this unit the students will: 1. Write a friendly letter as Shirley Temple Wong describing her new life in New York. 2. Write a persuasive essay agreeing and/or disagreeing with horoscope traits and characteristics of themselves according to their birth year. 3. State their opinion on the enjoyment or dislike of the book and justify answers with appropriate support response, 4. Write a paper to compare and contrast hardships faced by Jackie Robinson and Shirley Temple Wong, 5. Locate information about Jackie Robinson and create a graphic organizer. This Track will meet the learning expectations Of the Tennessee Curriculum Framework Language Arts standard that states that students will develop the structural and creative skills necessary to produce written language that can be read and interpreted by various audiences.

This unit was created for a 5th grade Language Arts class. During this unit the students will : 1.create a Venn diagram to identify similarities and differences between 2 characters in A FAMILY APART. 2. Write a 3 paragraph report on the Orphan Train folowing a guided outline. 3. Write a letter to the author of A FAMILY APART stating their like or dislike with justification of their response. 4. Students will record and respond to text by choosing quotations from the book and responding to them making them relevant to everyday life. 5. Students willlocate informationand make a graphic organizer about Charles Loring Brace. This track will meet the learning expectations of the Tennessee Curriculum Framework Language Art standard which states that the student will use appropriate organizational strategies to develop writing including main idea and supporting details.

The 5th grade science students will be able to identify the 4 kinds of pollution, research their causes, effects, and possible solutions and present this information in a Power Point presentation by completing the unit Pollution Solution. The activities in this unit include the use of the 5 step scientific method to illustrate an experiment and demonstrate each experiment to the class. A chart will be used to organize the research into cause, effect, and solution cateogories. This information will then be used to present a Power Point presentation. Cartoon characters will be created with a poem including facts from the information found in the student's research. This unit was created from the Tennessee Curriculum Framework for Science (grade 3-5). Tables and graphs may be used to interpret the meaning and significance of data. Habits of Mind: Problems may be solved in more than one way and have more than one solution.
