 Track Description
The story of "The Cricket In Times Square" takes place at a newsstand in a subway station in Times Square, as well as visiting other places in New York City. Utilization of this story will address the learning gap of students in identifying the setting of a story. Students who do not travel are introduced to places they may never see in real life. In teaching this unit I utilize not only the Internet sites that view literal places in New York City, I bring in tourist brochures, 3-D puzzles, and background information on the cricket itself. In reading the story, the students learn to appreciate the written text, gain comprehension skills, and learn new words. The students obtain hands own experience in using the computer to research, interpret, analysis and evaluate what they read and see.
