Track Description
I chose this unit because it allows me to integrate reading with a Social Studies unit on the Middle Ages. Students will be able to strengthen their comprehension skills and vocabulary by inferring word meaning from context clues. Students will use these new skills as they respond to the literature through writing. This unit meets the Tennessee Curriculum Frameworks standard for Language Arts 6-8: Reading: The student will develop the reading skills necessary for word recognition, comprehension, interpretation, analysis, evaluation and appreciation of the written test. As they use these sites to gather information, students will complete the following activities: 1) answer questions about an online interview with Karen Cushman; 2) compare/contrast their lives with the life of an adolescent of the Middle Ages; 3) create a food poster about foods of the Middle Ages; 4) create a character web of a character in the book; 5) create a mobile of England including a map, population, flag, official language, official currency, and three geographical regions.
