After reviewing 1998-1999 Terra-Nova scores, it was quite evident that my fourth-grade students experienced difficulty with fractions. The math standards for grades 3-5 in the TN Curriculum Framework Content is NUMBER SENSE AND NUMBER THEORY. In order to develop number sense and an understanding of number theory, the mathematics curriculum must include problems which require students to recognize, represent, and model real numbers and operations verbally, physically, symbolically, and graphically. The learning expectations for fractions are as follows: Through the investion of meaningful problems, individually or in cooperative groups while using appropriate technology, all students in grades 3-5, building upon the K-2 expectations, will be able to: (1) demonstrate an understanding of whole numbers, fractions, and decimals through the use of technology and physical, pictorial, and symbolic representations; (2) demonstrate an understanding of order relationships for fractions, decimals, and whole numbers using physical, verbal, and symbolic representations; (3) apply the study of whole numbers and fractions to situations in the learners' environment; and (4) use geometric models to illustrate properties of whole numbers and fractions and their operations.
