 Track Description
Track-A-Day Top Track

Abstract: Resources for Kite building and appreciation, along with a few explanations of equipment.

Overview: Students will use basic drafting tools in a controlled exercises in precision pattern making. By drafting plans of kites, they will explore 3 dimensional kinetic artwork, and be encouraged to explore the concepts of proportion, scaling, and aerodynamics.

Objectives:
Within a 2-5 day period of time each student should complete the following project. Perhaps it might begin on Monday and be scheduled to culminate on Friday. Since the kites involved are often relatively fragile, weather may play a large factor in scheduling or rescheduling.

  1. Using the Internet, students will gather information on kite building including (but not necessarily limited to):
    • Possible material lists
    • Design plans and ideas
    • Original kite art
    • Information on kites around the world and public festivals of aerodynamic design display
  2. From their exploration, each student will select or design a specific kite for which they will create the plans and build using materials provided in class or gleaned on their own.
  3. Students may enter their kites in school wide competition for overall points to be judged by a teacher selected panel in the following categories:
    • most maneuverable
    • highest flier
    • most colorful
    • most durable
    • most original design
    • judges favorite

Grading:
Grades will eventually be assigned by the teacher, who will wish to create some sort of objective rubric for this purpose.

Grading Rubric Suggestions

  1. Does the Kite Fly? (If the kite flies for 3 minutes or more at a height of 10 feet or more above the ground, then the answer is yes.) (1 point)
  2. Is the kite symmetrical, or if not is there a compelling reason for an asymmetric
