The Building Vocabulary unit was designed to help 6th graders who have difficulty in reading comprehension because of limited vocabulary. This unit will focus on helping them improve in that area by providing several challenging and fun activities centered around learning new words and how to use them. The TN Curriculum Standard for Language Arts Reading 6-8 states: “The student will develop the reading skills necessary for word recognition, comprehension, interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and appreciation of the written text.” This unit meets that standard by helping students with word recognition. The unit also addresses the Teacher Profiler Survey items #6 “My students find ways to use what they learn” and #24 “My students use Internet to answer questions or practice skills online.” Students will be using their new words in classroom conversation and writing and they will be given time to work on vocabulary games and drills online.
