 Track Description
Using teacher evaluation, I realized the students had experiences analyzing books and stories collectively, but did not have experience doing this independently. Through the use of a teacher-made survey, I discovered 80% of the children had not had experience with the Internet. The unit of study on Jan Brett has activities requiring analysis through the use of a story map, identifying problem and solution, writing comparisons of her books, and responding to questions concerning feelings and making other personal responses to various aspects of the story. The students will gain knowledge about the variety of possibilities available through the use of the Internet by listening to Jan Brett's own voice on the "Hedge-a-gram", corresponding with Jan Brett via e-mail, doing extended research and reporting to the class on topics in her books, entering a contest and doing various fun and interesting activities correlating to each of her books. The activities in this unit meet criteria established in the level K-2 content standard, which states: The student will develop the reading skills necessary for word recognition, comprehension, interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and appreciation of the written text. They meet the level K-2 computer technology: literacy and usage standard no. 6 which states: The student will use technology as a tool to conduct and evaluate research and to communicate effectively information and ideas. The unit specifically meets the following learning expectations from the reading content standard: 1. Use comprehension strategies to enhance understanding, to relate ideas, to organize information, to make predictions, and to distinguish fact from fantasy during the reading process. 2. Learn to locate and recognize sources of information including technological tools. It specifically meets the criteria in the learning expectation from computer technology: literacy and usage, which states: 1. The student will demonstrate supervised use of
