Track-A-Day
This track has been created for Miss Lee's kindergarten class. The learning standards addressed are--The student will develop the reading skills necessary for word recognition, comprehension, interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and appreciation of the written text; and the student will explore a wide variety of literature through reading aloud, tapes, library centers, etc.; the student will recognize a purpose for listening and listen to a passage attentively. The Profiler survey items addressed are the student will relate things learned in one subject (library) to another subject (science). The teacher will use the Internet to research and develop the unit. The students will use information from the Internet to explore the parts, uses, and needs of plants, which will be reinforced by the stories. This track combines Internet resources and printed books to teach the basic parts, needs, and importance of plants. Students will recognize that science can be learned from stories. Activities will include listening to several stories dealing with plants. Students will discuss and the class will chart the information about plants gained from each story. Students will use the Internet to look at pictures of plants and label their parts. Students will use the Internet to find out more about plants than was found in reading aloud. Students will each check out books including plants to take home and study. Students will examine several plants to determine their parts. Students will follow a seed's development in class. Teacher will bring in vegetables, fruits, flowers, clothing, and other materials made from plants. Teacher and students will discuss human need for plants. Students and teacher will create a story including newly learned information about plants.
