 Track Description
Through teacher-made questionnaires and class discussions, I found that 90% of my 5th grade students were unaware that art could serve a purpose beyond that of decoration. TN Curriculum Frameworks for Visual Arts, Grade 3-5 states that children need to become aware of their art heritage and art in their everyday lives: they should recognize that art reflects characteristics of different periods of history, acknowledge the historical relationships between art and daily life, understand that aesthetic values of art change over time, recognize that art reflects the time, place nad cultural identity of those who create it, and discuss contemporary style trends in American Art as reflections of diversity in our culture. Another standard states that children need many opportunities to look at and talk about art: they should distinguish charactieristics of style in works of art, express personal preferences based on processes of art criticism, discuss art that communicates ideas, feelings, and moods, and exhibit aesthetic awareness by looking at, talking about, and comparing works of art. Learning expectations for these standards include the following: students will view various works of art from different periods of history, express their views on what is good or bad art, take an in depth look at three narrative paintings, compare and contrast styles of different artists throughout history, and view works by contemporary artists to express aesthetic views on these works. My students do not have the chance to visit museums. This unit allows them to see works of art from museums throughout the world. They will work individually and in groups discussing paintings andwill use the internet to research works of art, artists, and historical time periods.
