 Track Description
This track for 5th grade students was designed because my students were having trouble using observation skills and the Scientific Method when conducting Science experiments. The Fifth Grade Learning Expectations from the Science Standards (Grade 3-5 cluster) that this unit addresses are: (1) Awareness of our surroundings is a result of individual observations and prior knowledge. (2) Information is gathered by using human senses and various instruments such as magnifying lenses, microscopes, telescopes, thermometers, scales, and balances. (3) Effective communication is essential to the sharing of information and to the exposure to criticism by the scientific community. The activities from these lesson plans take the students from using simple observation skills to designing their own observation forms to actually using the steps of the Scientific Method to create their own invention. This track also helps the students to find more than one way to solve a problem, as described in the Teacher Usage Profiler Survey.
