 Track Description

This lesson is designed to familiarize students with several Native American Tribes from different regions in North America. Use a variety of classroom activities to integrate the information.

Students will have produced a chart of comparison for four (4) tribes from North America. Their chart might include housing, food, clothing, transportation, and ways the tribe survived or made a living.

Students should draw and label a current North American map, showing the geographical location of each tribe. They can create a Venn diagram showing the results of their research.

Students can also create a tribal stamp or quilt showing elements that identify each culture. Students can develop and explain a "Native American" reunion; setting up an area of land where tribes of similarity are closer together. They should be able to explain why certain tribes are placed closer together.

Also included in this track are assignments to create a vocabulary list, crossword puzzle, and wordsearch, using key terms from the various sites. This teacher has also included an assessment tool.

Students can build a PowerPoint presentation to show:

-Slide 1: Includes a large graphic, the tribal name, and the names of all the people in student group.

-Slide 2: A map of the part of the United States that the tribe came from

-Slide 3: Introduce the types of shelter this tribe used. Include a picture of one of the shelters.

-Slide 4: A page introducing the foodstuff of the tribe, including crops grown

-Slide 5: A page dedicated to the clothing of the tribe

-Slide 6: A page about transportation used by the tribe

-Slide 7: A page focusing on the way the tribe survived or made a living

-Slide 8: A page that explains why the tribe is or is not still active; why is the tribe extinct or why do you think the tribe is still "living"?

-Slide 9: A page that explains what the student learned from this project

*Illustrations are expected for each slide.
