A farm is a place where a variety of things exist, grow, and multiply. A dictionary is like a farm. It gives a description of the words that already exist in a language, how they can grow (i.e. adding -ing, -ed, etc.), and how they multiply (dictionaries are always being revised as new words are added to the collection).
