Track #56179
Format: Resource list
In evaluating Terra Nova scores for l999-2000, I found that at least 60% of the fifth graders fail below the 50th percentile in reading comprehension. A TN Curriculum Framework Content Standard for English/ Language Arts for Grades 3-5 states "the student will develop the reading skills necessary for word recognition, comprehension, interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and appreciation of the written text." In order for students to comprehend the story, they must recognize the important details, comprehend vocabulary within the story, make interpretations about the story, make analysis, evaluate characters, settings, and plots within a story, and gain an appreciation for the story. Learning expectations for these standards include the following: The student will write a letter to their parents persuading why they should be able to have a pet; Write a manual for caring for a pet; Write a three paragraph report of information they have found at four different websites; Create a tri-fold advertisement brochure for a state fair; and Make a compare/contrast chart of two barns, then write a descriptive paragraph of one. This unit will provide various strategies for teaching students to recognize important details in the story. It will also enable my students to use the Internet to research topics.

A TN Curriculum Framework Content Standard for English/Language Arts for Grades 3-5 states "the student will develop reading skills necessary for word recognition, comprehension, interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and appreciation of the written text." Learning expectations for these standards will include the following: The student will recall major details of a story; Match text with illustrations, retell story in writing and verbally; sequence major events, read and make words from related word families, write, proof, and publish a story retold in own words. This unit will enable students to improve reading comprehension. It will enable the student to develop the reading skills necessary for word recognition, comprehension, interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and appreciation of the written text. My teacher survey showed me the need for students to communicate what they learn. This unit gives them the opportunity to retell a story. This unit will also enable my students to use the Internet to practice skills on line and to research folk tales.

Track #22989
Format: Resource list
In evaluating Terra Nova scores for l999, I found that at least 75% of my 5th graders experienced difficulty passing a test explaining the forces of gravity that control earth's movement. A TN Curriculum Framework Content for Science Standards for Grades 3-5 is interactions of matter and energy shape our world. The Science Curriculum states that students must understand that living things contribute energy to and take energy away from non-living surroundings causing changes in both. The interactions of matter and energy are subject to accepted physical laws. Learning expectations for these standards will include the following: The student will work in a cooperative group to discover about earth's shape and gravity using a globe, a set of questions, and library resources; define the terms: rotate, revolve, and orbit; demonstrate what motion of the earth causes night and day; describe how the length of the year on the earth is determined; be able to name the 9 planets of the Solar System and know basic important characteristics that make each one different from the other. This unit will provide different strategies for teaching about the solar system.
