 Track Description
In evaluating Terra Nova scores for l999-2000, I found that at least 60% of the fifth graders fail below the 50th percentile in reading comprehension. A TN Curriculum Framework Content Standard for English/ Language Arts for Grades 3-5 states "the student will develop the reading skills necessary for word recognition, comprehension, interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and appreciation of the written text." In order for students to comprehend the story, they must recognize the important details, comprehend vocabulary within the story, make interpretations about the story, make analysis, evaluate characters, settings, and plots within a story, and gain an appreciation for the story. Learning expectations for these standards include the following: The student will write a letter to their parents persuading why they should be able to have a pet; Write a manual for caring for a pet; Write a three paragraph report of information they have found at four different websites; Create a tri-fold advertisement brochure for a state fair; and Make a compare/contrast chart of two barns, then write a descriptive paragraph of one. This unit will provide various strategies for teaching students to recognize important details in the story. It will also enable my students to use the Internet to research topics.
