In evaluating Terra Nova scores for 1999-2000, I found that at least 60% of my fifth graders fail below the 50th percentile in reading comprehension. A TN Curriculum Framework Content Standard for English/Language Arts for Grades 3-5 states "the student will develop reading skills necessary for word recognition, comprehension, interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and appreciation of the written text."
Learning expectations for these standards will include the following: The student will recall major details of a story; Match text with illustrations, retell story in writing and verbally; sequence major events, read and make words from related word families, write, proof, and publish a story retold in own words.
This unit will enable students to improve reading comprehension. It will enable the student to develop the reading skills necessary for word recognition, comprehension, interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and appreciation of the written text.
My teacher survey showed me the need for students to communicate what they learn. This unit gives them the opportunity to retell a story. This unit will also enable my students to use the Internet to practice skills on line and to research folk tales.
