Fairy Tales and Fables

These links provide access to literature units based on fairy tales and fables. The units provide a variety of activities to engage my fourth grade students in reading, research, writing, analyzing, art, drama, and using a database. Students are given the opportunity to explore Internet sites and research several different topics pertaining to fables and fairy tales. They are given the opportunity to complete a fairy tale database which allows them to present what they have learned in different ways as stated in the Profiler survey. A TN Curriculum Frameworks Content for Reading in grades 3-5 states “The student will develop the reading skills necessary for word recognition, comprehension, interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and appreciation of the written text.” Learning expectations for this unit include: * Student will use different ways to show others what they have learned. * Student can choose which parts of a topic are most important to explain to others. * Students can spot the important facts, concepts and vocabulary when they are learning something new. * Students will think about and use their best skills to complete a task.

These links provide access to literature units based on the book, Charlotte's Web. The units provide a variety of activities to engage my fourth grade students in reading, research, writing, cooking and art. Students are given the opportunity to explore Internet sites and research several different topics and do projects connected to the research while reading the book, Charlotte's Web. A TN Curriculum Frameworks Content for Reading in grades 3-5 states:"The student will develop the reading skills necessary for word recognition, comprehension, interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and appreciation of the written text." Learning expectations for this unit include the following: *Use comprehension strategies to enhance understanding, to make predictions, and to respond to literature. *Students will demonstrate basic comprehension of details in the novel.*Students will use Internet in class to research topics. *Students will think about and use their best skills to complete a task. *Students will develop reading skills necessary for analysis of text. *Students will improve comprehension by interpreting, analyzing, synthesizing, and evaluating written text.

These links provide activities about nutrition, health, and physical education to use with grades four through six. The units are designed to provide you with information on valuable places on the Internet. There are many activities included which encourage healthy eating. A TN Curriculum Frameworks Content for Comprehensive Health in grades 3-5 states: The student will understand the relationship of sound nutrition to total lifetime wellness. To achieve this standard, the learner will: *relate reasons for including various foods within the Food Guide Pyramid *demonstrate an understanding of proportionality as it applies to the Food Guide Pyramid (i.e., some foods are needed in greater quantities than others) *explain how weight is controlled by balancing diet and exercise *read food labels and make good food choices *understand the importance of cleanliness in handling and consuming food *differentiate between nutrition and nutrients *examine why certain foods have limited nutritional value *explain that energy is measured in calories *prepare simple healthy snacks *identify factors that influence personal food choices, i.e., labeling, media advertising *consumer education and availabilities *examine nutrients and their functions *distinguish between calories consumed and calories expended *make healthy food choices based on nutritional value *explain how food consumption contributes to an individual level of health *demonstrate awareness of multicultural influences on food choices *evaluate the importance of eating at least five fruits and vegetables daily *assess reasons for dietary guidelines *use the Food Pyramid as a guide for choosing a variety of foods necessary for good health *recognize and avoid food fads *examine food sources important during adolescent growth spurts *analyze why certain foods are preferred and what factors cue eating behavior *evaluate snacking options; determine and apply healthy choices
