 Track Description
It’s not a vacation. It’s a sabbatical. This presentation will explore some experiences of one teacher educator who had the professional development opportunity to trade places and be an online student while on a sabbatical leave for a semester. Online learning is an increasingly important aspect of higher education and for teacher education. Students and teachers need to develop new scholastic skills in light of this development. Online students apply, register, participate, are examined and graded. Yet, many teacher educators have little experience of being a student online while having access to resources for and opportunities to teach online. Discussions about online teaching and learning are often abstract. Many focus mainly on what it means to be an instructor online. Less frequently, the focus is on what it is like and what it means to be a student online. How does it feel to be a teacher educator on the other side of the looking glass in the role of a student online? What is it like to be a student online? What are some advantages and disadvantages of this approach to learning? How does the technology work? How does one relate to classmates and instructors that one cannot see or hear? What study habits serve students well for online learning?
