The learning gap my third grade students have in math problem solving is addressed in in this unit of study.After completing this collection of lessons it is hoped that my students will be able to successfully complete their own math problems using manipulatives and will find ways to use what they have learned to solve the various story problems.This lesson addresses:Math Standard 3-5 NUMBER SENSE AND NUMBER THEORY: In order to develop Number Sense and an understanding of Number Theory, the mathematics curriculum must include problems which require students to recognize, represent, and model real numbers and operations verbally, physically, symbolically, andgraphically.ESTIMATION, MEASUREMENT, AND COMPUTATION: In order to develop understanding of Estimation,Measurement, and Computation, the mathematics curriculum should include problems which require students to apply appropriate tools and units of measurement, to develop effective estimation and computation strategies for producing reasonable results, and to calculate using appropriate tools such as mental mathematics, technology, manipulatives, and pencil-and-paper. In this lesson my students will have to think about their best skills and use them to complete a task and be willing to try tasks that seem hard to do.I chose the unit because I needed a combination of lessons that taught the students how to spot the important facts, concepts and vocabulary for problem solving.
