Eighth grade students read Hatchet as part of their regular Reading curriculum to increase understanding, word recognition, and analysis as well as appreciation of literature. This unit will add enrichment activities that will give extra practice in those skills and help the students gain helpful background knowledge that should aid their comprehension of the novel. In doing this, the unit addresses TN Curriculum Standard for Language Arts Reading 6-8 which states: "The student will develop the reading skills necessary for word recognition, comprehension, interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and appreciation of the written text." It also addresses Survey item #22 (My students use Internet in my classroom to research topics) because students will be doing several enrichment activities that depend on Internet research.
