Track Description
The Write It Right unit based on Fables was designed to give middle school language arts students the opportunity to practice writing skills including mechanics of punctuation as they first studied written fables then wrote their own. Our students show a significant learning gap in applying rules of punctuation and this exercise should help to narrow that gap as they review and practice punctuation skills on Internet prior to writing their fables. The TN Curriculum Framework Standard for Language Arts
6-8 Writing states: The student will develop the structural and creative skills necessary to produce written language that can be read and interpreted by various audiences. This unit meets that standard because language mechanics reviewed in this study are one of the learner expectations listed under that standard. Survey item #5, My students learn something as completely as they can will be addressed since students will be reinforcing punctuation skills learned earlier. Survey item #24, My students use Internet to answer questions or practice skills online will be addressed as students use online tutorials and skills drills to improve the punctuation of their fables.
