 Track Description
My third grade students exhibited a learning gap in measurement. Many of the students could not identify the uses of measurements in mathematics, did not recognize the need for knowing how big or long something is, and were not able to use a ruler. This was evidenced by 70% of my students not passing a pre test in this area. Math was also identified as being a need for improvement in our school wide improvement plan. The lessons in this track addresses the learning gap and encourages hand on experiences in order to master this skill. The lessons align with The Tennessee Math Standard for Grades 3-5 which states: Estimation , Meassurement, and Computation: In order to develop understanding of Estimation, Measurement, and Computation, the mathematics curriculum should include problems which require students to apply appropriate tools and units of measurement, to develop effective estimation and computation strategies for producing reasonable results. and to calculate using appropriate tools such as mental mathematics, technology, manipulatives, and pencil-and-paper.Each lesson in this track builds upon the other. The lessons start at a low level and progress as the students master the objective in each lesson. Learning expectations for this track are:1. TLW make estimates of what they think a giant's :height, circumference and length of foot would be.2. TLW accurately measure their shadows at three different times during the day and figure the difference in the lengths and discuss why changes occur. 3. TLW define horizontal, vertical, and circumference and create a graph of their findings for the crown, trunk and height of a tree. 4.The learner will measure, draw, and cut out a flying wheel out of 6 inch card.
