This unit of study is for Listening and Speaking for better communication. It will focus on students applying active listening skills. To be able to analyze and evaluate the spoken word. Today students do not listen to discern, but to respond. Therefore, if we do not have good listeners, communications will suffer and comprehension levels will be lower.

This lesson plan is for the book "Holes." It focuses on reading, fluency comprehension, vocabulary, written expression in journals, changing adolescent behavior and attitudes, and increasing the enjoyment of reading. The purpose of this lesson is to get the reluctant reader, the discouraged learner and the disinterested teen to develop an appreciation of reading. For the avid student this will be an opporunity to be a 'student teacher' and take the responsibility for getting others to read orally, deciding how much each student will read, giving points or grades to students who read orally, helping with unfamiliar words or helping with questions, asking comprehensive questions and assigning journal prompts.

The curriculum framework states that students will recognize the use of propaganda techniques when used in a reading passage or advertisement. This Unit was chosen because it will mitigate a learning gap in the 8th grade Language Arts class. Students will be made aware that advertisers often exaggerate or stretch the truth to increase their product's appeal to consumers. They need to know that this is a deliberate attempt to foster ideas that may not be true. They must discriminate what an advertisement implies and what is actually true. The student will do a Power Point presentation or produce and present a video of an advertisement using propaganda techniques.

The curriculum framework states that students will exhibit an understanding of the contributions made, within our culture, by African Americans. THis is a learning gap in the 8th grade Language Arts class. Students need to recognize and acknowledge these contributions. This unit will create an awareness of technological advances made by African Americans. It will allow students to apply their Internet browsing skills to locate information. It will help the students to organize and summarize their thoughts in an essay. They will develop an oral presentation with visuals or power point. Students will practice note taking skills during presentations. They will formulate questions for discussion during small groups to help them assess the information obtained during presentations. Students will develop an interest in literature and will articulate what they have learned.

Newspaper as a Resource

The curriculum framework states that students will use, read, and view media/technology and analyze content and concepts accurately. This is a learning gap in the 8th grade Language Arts class. Students will be exposed to all aspects of a newspaper and will be expected to discern between opinion and fact,identify author's point of view, recognize the main idea in an article. The students will learn the different sections of a newspaper and where to locate information. The students will develop an awareness of the newspaper as a resource. They will recognize persuasive text. Students will apply their technology skills as they review and summarize different editorial projects. They will recognize acronyms as used in a newspaper. They will be exposed to job hunting and what qualifications will be needed to seek employment. They will recognize vocabulary words in the paper. The students will finish with a letter to the editor.

"At Risk"

A TN Curriculum Framework content for speaking and listening for grades 6-8 states that students will express ideas clearly and effectively in a variety of oral contexts and apply active listening skills. This is a learning gap for the "At Risk" Character Education students. Learning Expectations for this standard includes the following: To produce a research paper on morals, increase listening skills, learn to take responsibility for their performance, become better observers and how to understand differing perspectives. The students will learn to use a complaint process to resolve problems.
