<P>The United States of America has been a beacon - albeit a very imperfect one - of freedom and democracy for more than 200 years.&nbsp; At its finest America has been a defender of freedom and human rights both at home and abroad.&nbsp; However, the United States has also has also failed in some instances to live up to its lofty ideals, most notably in its treatment of black Americans and the American Indian.&nbsp; </P> <P>This Trackstar lesson focuses on the clash of the culture of the Indians of the Great Plains and white settlers looking to move westward onto the great westward frontier.&nbsp; In the following tracks you will read about the culture of the Plains Indians, the value of the buffalo to their way of life, and how the Great Plains changed with the arrival of the white settlers.&nbsp; You will also learn about two tragically dark chapters of American history, known as the Sand Creek Massacre and Wounded Knee.&nbsp; Finally, you will learn the important role that Red Cloud, Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull played with their people.</P> <P>&nbsp;</P>

<p>Now that you've met and spent some time with Sir Ulrich von Liechtenstein, met his friends and &quot;road crew,&quot; and know a little about jousting and the kind of equipment a knight needs in order to compete at tournament and, more importantly, to fight in battle, you can now create your own knight, just like William Thatcher did.</p><p>Your task and objective is the following:</p><p>1.  Answer two brief sets of questions on the first two links.  </p><p>2.  Research the links to create a knight, just like William Thatcher did.  Give your knight a name and a place where he is from.  Does he know any dances?  Who is his lady and what is she like?)</p><p>3.  Give him friends and a crew just like Sir Ulrich had.  Each person in the crew should perform a specific function for Sir Ulrich.  (e.g., remember how Kate made the armour)  Each person in your group is going to be assigned a specific role i the group.</p><p>4.  Design and draw a shield (see the links) that best reflects the personality of youur knight.  You will have art supplies and be graded based on the rubric passed out to you.</p>
